Uplink Power Control System Uplink power controllers, with an embedded beacon receiver module based in Novella’s established compact tracking receiver engine, to adjust transmitted power of an uplink station in accordance with beacon downlink loss at the same location. These are very simple units with up to ten separate IF / gain amplifiers whose gains are adjusted by the DC output voltage provided by the beacon receiver as a measure of beacon level. This is a very simple way of increasing the transmitted power to compensate for uplink fade which is assumed to be approximately the same as the downlink fade. Maximum depth of fade correction may be selected from 2 to 10dB, and it prevents saturation of the HPA. Test Loop Translator The term Test Loop Translator designates a range of frequency converters, usually with the same or similar input and output coverage and bandwidth, with fixed or pre-set Local Oscillator (LO), and preset gain. Some models may be supplied with an agile or pre-settable LO and adjustable gain. They are used to translate signals between uplink and downlink segments of the same band, between uplink or downlink SHF segments and L-band, or between SHF segments of different bands. Redundancy Switches Novella supplies frequency converter redundant systems in 1:1 up to 1:8 configurations. These systems may be of frequency agile or block converters. The simplest 1:1 redundant system consists of a RU03 unit with two coaxial switches mounted on the rear panel. This system has the advantages of low insertion losses and very good isolation between master and slave signal paths. This system may be used with agile or block converters. Novella supplies also a simple 1:2 system suitable only for block converters. Two sets of three coaxial switches allow a third block converter to function as spare for two master block converters. This configuration is ideal for dual polarisation up or downlinks with L-band interface. The latest frequency synthesis techniques and surface mount components are used to achieve wide coverage, frequency agility, very low phase noise and level of spurii. These modules may be packaged on their own, as L-Band upconverters, or together with L-band to SHF block upconverters (BUCs) as C, X, Ku or DBS-band upconverters.
